Building fusion devices and for fusion devices has been my passion since I graduated as a plasma physicist. After years in academia, delivering a reflectometer for ITER was a great learning experience that helped me rethink my approach to the private fusion industry. That's how Next Step Fusion was born as a fusion supply chain company, where I proudly invited several people with unique plasma physics and fusion engineering backgrounds.
Georgy Subbotin, Luxembourg
Chief Technology Officer
Fusion is a topic that rarely leaves people indifferent. At the end of 2022, while being deeply involved in deep tech investment, I still believed that commercial fusion would never truly happen and would remain “always 30 years away.” However, scientific breakthroughs, the rapid growth in the number of fusion companies, and reconnecting with my former classmate and our CTO, Georgy, led me to reconsider that view to such an extent that I founded Next Step Fusion in Luxembourg, investing my own capital and committing 100% of my time to the company.
Aleksei Zolotarev, Luxembourg
CEO and Founder
Fusion has always been more than just a scientific interest to me — it has been a long-standing ambition to contribute to building the future of energy. Earlier in my career, I worked at the Kurchatov Institute and was involved in research related to the TJ-II stellarator, gaining hands-on experience in plasma physics and magnetic confinement systems. Today, as a Program Manager working on tokamak design, advanced simulations, and related projects, I am able to bring that experience into practice, contributing directly to the development of next-generation fusion technologies.
Dr. Mikhail Drabinskiy, Luxembourg
Program Manager
Fusion research has always been a deeply collaborative and international effort, which is what initially drew me to the field. I worked at the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences and later continued at the ITER Organization, contributing to large-scale fusion projects within the global scientific community. I was happy to join Next Step Fusion because of its strong team, engaging projects, and its deep integration into the fusion community, both public and private.
